Ode to the Lijiang Amusement Park Ode to the Lijiang Amusement Park

Countless of years, you've been standing here

Rusting, aging with dignity

How many children have not laughed with delight

as they rode the rusty train around the little concrete garden?

Concrete Garden Train

How many proud tears did not trickle down wet cheeks

when you finally stood in there newbuilt splendour?

How many happy hours have not the
children of China spent

playing here, in the embrace of the Children's Palace?

The Childrens Palace

The train now stands still, it has not moved for years

the old ticket woman still sits in the booth

remembering the golden years of the amusement park

The laughter no longer rises from the Children's Palace

The kids have grown up, skating in the pay-per-hour skating rink

to the blast of cracked speakers,

where once they did morning gymnastics

The Lijiang Town House

And poor Mao on the other side of the center square

still trying to reach out to the proud Naxi pair

set in stone in front of the communal building

the one with a rubble for porch and blue sky for roof
