Religious
use of the Internet
Religion
The Vatican State has a web page where you can confess your sins. A Japanese
Buddhist temple offers virtual graves for deceased relatives - and VIRTUAL
PETS! The religious use of Internet is a highly interesting phenomenon
- it represents an even further mediation of religious experience than
the medieval Indulgences.
You don't even have to go through a HUMAN channel to communicate with
your chosen deity, just type in a web address - no guilt, no hard feelings,
they won't take the trouble to trace you because you can confess through
anonymous remailers. Actually, a huge step has thus been taken towards
the democratization of religion! Priests? Who needs 'em? Just throw in
a PriestBot, an intelligent agent who can deliver the Sunday sermon to
you in the comfort of your own home.
You can also subscribe to a mailing list with suitably "fire and
brimstone" sermons once a week - you can save them on your hard disk
for further reference. No more evil patriarch priests who control a whole
village by cruelly pulling the rights strings and threatening with Hell
- now, if you don't like the sermon, just press 'delete' and no frightening
thoughts will assail you.
